One scholarship is specifically for Indigenous Australians, and APPEA encourages applications from Indigenous Australians who are starting or already undertaking an engineering degree in Australia that is relevant to the oil and gas industry.
The other scholarship is open to all Australian residents who are starting or undertaking an engineering degree in Australia relevant to the oil and gas industry.
Value of scholarships
The award for each scholarship is for $5000 per year up to a maximum of five years full-time or part-time equivalent. Additional funding of up to $5000 per annum is available for the Indigenous Australian Scholarship recipient for agreed mentoring services.
Vacation work experience with oil and gas major
The scholarships include the expectation that paid vacation work experience will be provided with an APPEA member oil and gas operating company within Australia.
Applications must be received on or before Friday, 27 April 2012

THE TONY NOON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
APPEA is currently seeking applications from students intending to study for honours, Masters or PhD degrees at an Australian university for the award of a one-off grant to a maximum value of $3000.
The 2011 Tony Noon Scholarship was awarded to University of Melbourne PhD geology student Ashleigh Hood.
Information on applying for the 2012 scholarship will be given in April 2012.
The Tony Noon fund is aimed at helping students who are aspiring to, or considering, a career in upstream petroleum in any discipline directly related to the industry. This could include, but is not restricted to, exploration, safety, engineering, environmental management, economic or legal areas.
Tony Noon worked at APPEA from 1994-1998. His principal responsibilities were to the Health Safety & Production and Exploration Committees. His work on these Committees was outstanding and his contribution to APPEA and the industry during his time at the Canberra office was exceptional. Sadly, he passed away in September 1998 following a long battle with leukaemia.
Subsequently, the APPEA Board approved the establishment of the Tony Noon Memorial Fund in memory of Tony Noon and his outstanding contribution to the petroleum industry through his work with the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy and later as a member of the APPEA staff.
Funds cannot be used for any purpose other than as set out in the successful application. APPEA reserves the right not to award the funds if it deems the applicants are not of a suitable calibre.
Criteria for the award
Applications must be attending the university in the year of application and must be an Australian resident or citizen.
Applications must provide details of the funds sought the purpose to which they will be applied, and a statement setting out how the applicant and their career will benefit.
Applications may seek support for:
How to apply
Applicants should address the criteria and set out the nature of the work and the type of activity for which funding is sought. The award will be made on the basis of the nature and relevance of the research to the petroleum industry. Applications must include a statement of support from either the applicant’s supervisor or head of department.
Applications in writing are to be addressed to:
APPEA Awards & Scholarships Committee
Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association
GPO Box 2201
CANBERRA ACT 2601
Further information on applying will be made available in April 2012.

The Scholarship is available to Australian residents for study in Australia and is for a maximum of $10,000 per year. Funds can be used for:
The recipient of the award can hold the scholarship in conjunction with another and may be invited to deliver a paper at the annual APPEA Conference.
This scholarship was presented to University of Western Australia postgraduate student Paul Hofman at the 2009 APPEA Annual General Meeting held in Perth on 14 October 2009.
