Overview

The oil and gas industry is unique in that it works with high pressure and high temperature flammable fluids often at the cutting edge of technology and in sometimes hostile and mobile operating environments.

The Australian oil and gas industry is aiming to develop a reputation as a global safety leader, and to drive real and sustained improvements in safety and health performance.

Protecting the safety and health of all workers is a core value for the industry and provides significant opportunities through reduced risk, reduced cost (e.g. lower insurance premiums), better reputation and increased productivity.

A critical factor in operating safely and attaining these goals is to ensure that everyone, working within all levels of our industry, understands and is trained and competent to manage the inherent risks and hazards.

Given the complex nature of the operating environments the industry is constantly seeking innovative approaches to safety skills development and robust risk management.

CEO Safety Leadership Group

A group of over 80 CEOs across the Australian oil and gas industry participate in an annual CEO Safety Leadership Forum. This development of this forum in 2007 was a critical step to provide necessary alignment of initiatives across the industry operators and contractors plus the allocation of resources required to implement the actions.  Oil and gas CEOs have adopted an industry aspiration that applies to everyone working within the industry: “By working together, nobody gets harmed".

The APPEA HSO Committee meets quarterly and functions to: promote high standards of occupational health and safety and efficient operations amongst petroleum explorers, producers and contractors; facilitate the ongoing improvement of industry safety performance; and provide a forum for exchange of ideas on government regulations and industry standards covering safety and operations.
