Common Safety Training

From 6 April 2010, the offshore oil and gas industry leaders require all new personnel entering offshore drilling and producing sites to participate in the Common Safety Training Program and obtain a Common Safety Training Card. The Common Safety Training Program has been developed on behalf of the Australian oil and gas industry through a project managed by APPEA.

The program derives from a desire for improvements in the level of safety demonstrated in the workplace by persons entering the industry for the first time. Initially developed for the offshore industry the program will progressively be rolled out for onshore personnel and the Coal Seam Gas sector in QLD.

The program is not a specific safety training course; rather it is a program that provides the opportunity for existing courses and workplace activities to be mapped into a program with defined industry performance outcomes to be demonstrated. The program employs a two part assessment system which fundamentally changes the training and assessment paradigm to include active participation by workplaces.

This major safety leadership initiative of the APPEA CEO Safety Leadership Forum will see all new personnel entering offshore drilling and producing sites participating in a Common Safety Training Program to obtain a Common Safety Training Card.  The Program will be a new industry requirement from 6 April 2010. The Common Safety Training Program is  a 21st century response to a 21st century safety challenges.
