Overview

APPEA assists its member companies by working with the state, territory and Commonwealth governments to implement policies that promote investment and maximise returns to the Australian community from the development of the nation’s oil and gas resources.

The association seeks to increase community and government understanding of the upstream petroleum industry by publishing information about its activities and economic importance to the nation. APPEA also provides its members with a number of forums for exchanging ideas and contributing to the development of association policy positions.

There are three categories of membership: Full Member, Associate Member and Honorary Life Members (this category of membership is awarded to persons who, in the opinion of APPEA Board, have rendered meritorious service to APPEA or the industry).

To become a Full Member of APPEA you must be:
  • the holder of a registered tenement (or of any lawful interest in such a tenement to explore for and/or to produce petroleum in Australia); or
  • expending or lawfully obliged to expend money in the exploration for and/or production of petroleum in Australia; or
  • suitable for admission having regard to the actual or potential participation in and/or contribution to the industry.

Ten categories of full membership exist, ranging from small exploration and/or production companies with less than 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) production per year in Australia through to large producers with greater than 90 million barrels of annual production.

The category into which a member company falls is determined by the Board based on the company's mix of:

  • total predicted boe production;
  • total petroleum related expenditure for the current calendar year;
  • anticipated total petroleum related expenditure for the next calendar year; and
  • the relative size and standing of the company (market capitalisation).
