At its Darwin Board meeting yesterday, APPEA presented a life membership to Origin Energy’s outgoing Managing Director, Grant King, who is retiring after a distinguished career in the Australian energy industry.

Grant King was appointed Managing Director of Origin Energy at the time of its demerger from Boral Ltd in February 2000, and had been Managing Director of Boral Energy from 1994.

APPEA Chairman Bruce Lake said Mr King had contributed enormously to Australia’s oil and gas industry over more than two decades.

“Origin has oil and gas projects across Australia and under Grant’s leadership the company has committed massive levels of investment to major Australian oil and gas projects,” Mr Lake said.

“Origin has played a leading role in developing new Bass Strait oil and gas provinces – the Otway Basin and the Bass Basin.

“The company has also been one of the pioneers of Queensland’s gas industry.

“Origin’s exploration and appraisal programs are also revitalising mature onshore petroleum regions in Western Australia and South Australia.

“By developing major resources for both domestic and export markets, the company has contributed enormously to Australia’s prosperity and energy security.

“In addition, Grant has made an outstanding personal contribution to APPEA, the national oil and gas industry and the Australian energy sector.

“He served as an APPEA Board Director for two decades and played an important role in guiding the development of APPEA’s policy and advocacy.

“He has been an insightful and effective advocate for partnering natural gas with intermittent renewable energy in order to underpin energy security while also reducing global carbon emissions.

“The APPEA Board thanks Grant for his outstanding service to the Association and wishes him well for the future.”
