About the APPEA Journal
The APPEA Journal has its roots in the development of the Association. Conceived in the late 1950s by a group of prominent Australian geoscientists, the Australian Petroleum Exploration Association (APEA) was formed in 1960. Part of its brief was to hold an annual conference where technical papers would be presented and then published. The aim was to move the fledgling Australian upstream industry forward. The first edition of the APEA Journal was published in 1961.
As the industry grew and matured, the Association changed its name to the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) in 1996. The type of papers presented at the annual conference, and therefore in the APPEA Journal, has also changed. Currently there is a multidisciplinary approach with three main streams – geoscience, engineering and business management.
In an effort to keep the industry up to date with the latest innovations, the most recent change has been to publish all peer-review papers, extended abstracts and Plenary Presentations online. The 2017 APPEA Journal and Conference Proceedings will be available mid-June.
The APPEA journal is listed on the ERA (Excellence in Research for Australia) 2012 Journal List as ERAID 1707. (See http://www.arc.gov.au/era/era_2012/era_journal_list.htm)
