APPEA congratulates the Hon Gary Gray on his significant contribution to the development of Australia’s oil and gas resources.

APPEA Chief Executive Malcolm Roberts said Mr Gray will leave Parliament at the next federal election knowing that he has served his country well.

“Gary knows that a strong oil and gas industry is good for Australia and this is something he has worked tirelessly to deliver,” Mr Roberts said.

“Gary became Minister for Resources and Energy in March 2013 and continued to serve as Shadow Minister for Resources and Shadow Minister for Northern Australia after the September 2013 election.

“He brought a deep understanding of the resources sector, informed by his time as an executive with Woodside Energy from 2001 to 2007.

“Gary is known for his integrity and intelligence, and his policy approach reflected these qualities.

“He continued a tradition of bipartisanship in resources and energy policymaking – a willingness to eschew political opportunism and work with his Coalition counterparts to develop and implement the best possible policies.

“His policy approach was pragmatic – but this was a pragmatism based on economic and operational realities and an understanding of what would work in the real world – not by short-term political expediency.

“Gary was always ready to advocate and explain unpopular positions to the public, Parliament and his own side of politics. He never hesitated to point out the flaws in fashionable but erroneous policy demands.

“Above all, Gary has shown an unwavering commitment to policies and outcomes that serve the national interest ahead of all others.”
