World Ocean Day 2021

Today is World Ocean Day, which spreads awareness of conservation and restoration of the worlds oceans. More than 400 events are taking place across the world in celebration of the UN-backed event.

This year the focus is on protecting at least 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030, in keeping with the internationally recognised ’30×30′ plan.

The oceans of the world are home to many offshore operations, providing access to energy integral to everyday life. The Australian natural gas industry is strictly regulated when it comes to offshore operations in order to keep operating environments pristine.

Around 37% of Australia’s waters are classified as marine parks, and the industry works hard to ensure all operations are carried out as safely and sustainably as possible. In fact, many natural gas companies go beyond the base requirements of these regulations, partnering with specialists and third parties to promote biodiversity and marine health.

This includes projects such as the development of artificial reefs that promote marine ecosystems, or partnerships with institutions such as the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

In addition, water use for onshore operations are also closely monitored, and the industry works closely with landholders, graziers and other pastoralists within regional communities to ensure sufficient access to water is maintained. Landholders who work with oil and gas companies to provide access to their land can also benefit from upgraded farms and cheap access to water, providing a knock-on benefit and boosting regional economies.
